I’ve been teaching ESL at a high school in an impoverished district for well over a quarter century. We have so many immigrant ESL students that we can run self-contained ESL classes grouped by WIDA level. I taught through NCLB, and “ESL” was one of the categories of students that we were responsible to bring to “proficiency” by 2015. But when ESL students become “proficient”, they are removed from the ESL category. Meanwhile, new ESL students kept getting added to the ESL group as they immigrated to the area. Riddle me this - how were we supposed to accomplish the goal of bringing ALL of our ESL students to proficiency by 2015 under these circumstances? It was as if you took all of the Hispanic students in a school and changed their category to something else once they became proficient, and then chided the teachers because the students in the Hispanic category weren’t proficient. In fact, threatened them with loss of employment if they failed to do what was demonstrably impossible given the cockeyed parameters. And America applauded. DEMOCRATS applauded. Everyone clapped raucously as the public school teachers were flogged in public. And now you have a teacher shortage? Bed - Made - Lie, America. Bed - Made - Lie.

My understanding of meta-analysis is that the method typically focuses on the best studies that are strictly controlled and demonstrate significant differences and/or effect sizes.

Please don't forget to include families and communities in the conversation. Black families are telling us how Anti-Blackness is a major problem in schools today around the globe. The system is broken and cannot be fixed so we need be unapologetic about telling the truths about what happens to our Black families and Black children in educational systems around this nation and the globe. Research needs to be action based and unapologetic in its recommendations about what is needed. We look forward to seeing a call for proposals and congratulations on becoming President Professor Howard.

Have never met Dr. Howard though I have read his work. For me, this invitation to think about the next edges of growth for AERA is note-perfect. It strikes the right tone of urgency with grace and compassion. The point about being able to opt out of hard conversations about racism as a product of privilege is well made. The call to global perspective is compelling and timely (if not overdue). This is a case of a leader articulating a vision and calling for systems to be put in place to achieve it. I hope every member of AERA will take the time to watch this video and think about its implications for our work.

Critical video to help understand the colour line globally and how to think about dismantling racism and issues tied to intersectionalities of discrimination and markers of identities that overlap and therefore cannot be fully addressed in isolation. How does racism manifest itself across other identities and how have our practices, policies and pedagogies been shaped by history of race, racism, inequality, and schooling? We must create current day realities and we need to understand how we got to this place when imagining future possibilities as a call to action to boost inclusion. As we move towards AERA Philadelphia 2024, we need to listen more to young people and learn from them and be intentional in lifting up the work that is being done and broaden the tent at AERA by engaging the entire organisation in a dialogue about race and racism and how we can dismantle race and racism and have impact to make sure we do not re-scribe discrimination and exclusion. This call is for all SIGs and all divisions and we ask you not to disengage and to opt into this discussion because this is a privilege that not all folks have, so please stay engaged for this theme and to the call for constructing new education possibilities.
